It has been a LONG time since my last blog, but there’s a “Writer’s Moon” out tonight and that call can’t be ignored. A lot of life has happened along the way. Wrapping up the editing of “Angels”, the sequel to “The Metal Within.” A divorce. A new marriage. Blending families and beginning jobs, selling a house, a move, plenty of other stuff along the way. And building “Cabin 2.0.”
I wrote most of my first book in a powered outbuilding we referred to as “The Cabin”. Without going into too much detail, after moving into a smaller home I needed a place to write. There happened to be an existing outbuilding outside the existing new home, but it was not in good shape at all. In short, starting in February 2022, I tore down the existing structure, ordered a wooden shed kit, and began the process of building Cabin 2.0 – complete with soundproofing (I’ve been told I should record audio books and we’re not exactly remote.) As I did most of the work myself with family and friends, it took a while. It’s not finished yet, but this weekend we powered it up. I’ve got some trim-work to do, installing a second set of doors (for the soundproofing), and the carpet is coming, but it’s almost complete.
Since I basically started from ground zero with any building experience, I’ve learned a lot along the way, especially about soundproofing. Some of my education throughout the project has been hard-earned, so I’d be happy to respond to any questions someone has for me regarding any of the steps along the way.
I have a ton of people to thank. First of all, I thank my wife, Ruth, for not only allowing me to pursue my dream but for actually proactively supporting me throughout the entire process. My in-laws have been tremendously helpful; the fact that this structure is standing right now is directly attributed to their involvement and support. I have a great neighbor Michael who provided his electrician expertise without charging me a dime, and Apostle Flooring and Painting for their work on the painting and drywall, and other family and friends who helped out over time.
I know this is not my typical blog about my writing, but Cabin 2.0 is a tremendous step forward for me and I couldn’t ignore the timing. It’s a Writer’s Moon in October. Outside the werewolves might be howling, but I am at work in my lair.
